Lela Aisha
Jones

Artist-in-residence
movement artist & social activist

about the artist

Lela Aisha Jones is a movement artist that archives and performs lived experiences of blackness by intertwining personal history, diasporic movement, and social commentary. The foundation of her work is the individual and collective lived experiences of blackness as archived in and excavated from the body through dance.

As the founder of her creative home FlyGround, she directs her own artistic projects, the Dancing for Justice Philadelphia Initiative, and The Requisite Movers Program. As a lead organizer for the Dancing for Justice Philadelphia Initiative, she offers individual and collective processing spaces that build a racial consciousness and make visible oppressive systems. The Requisite Movers, founded by Lela and Deneane Richburg, supports the professional development of self and socially identified Black female/women movement artists and choreographers of African descent by providing artistic dialogue and critical feedback intensives and by presenting their work in performances.

Lela earned an MFA in Dance at Florida State University and holds a Ph.D. from Texas Woman’s University. She is on the dance faculty at Bryn Mawr University. Lela’s artistic accolades include a 2015 Leeway Foundation Transformation Award and a 2016 Pew Fellowship in the Arts.

Listen to Lela discuss her philosophy and vision for engaging with the natural environment of Tacony Creek Park and area residents.

Watch and listen to Dr. Jame McCray as she uses movement to interpret spoken text about human beings and our evolving relationship to the natural environment.
